Young Rams Show Promise in Season-Opening Victory

STRASBURG, VA – Strasburg fans, entering Ram Stadium on Friday night, wondered what to expect from their young team. Would they be nervous and undisciplined, or would they showcase their potential and skill? The answer, as it turned out, was a bit of both.

Their opponents, the East Hardy Cougars (0-1), demonstrated speed and aggression. However, Strasburg’s (1-0, 0-0 Bull Run) determination, powerful running game, and overall size – both in terms of individual players and roster depth – ultimately proved too much for the West Virginia visitors, resulting in a 27-13 victory for the Rams.

After receiving the opening kickoff, East Hardy initiated their first drive, which was swiftly halted by the Rams’ defense. Strasburg’s initial possession was equally unsuccessful, as three consecutive rushing attempts failed to gain a first down.

On their ensuing drive, the Cougars struck first. Utilizing a sweep play from their wing formation – a tactic that troubled Strasburg throughout the first quarter – they found their way to the end zone. Senior running back Daniel Sine, propelled by a wall of blockers, sprinted 76 yards for the game’s opening score. The extra point was missed, giving East Hardy a 6-0 lead with 5:54 remaining in the first quarter. From that point on, Strasburg took control.

Less than two minutes into the second quarter, the Rams registered their first points. Senior tailback Jason Wilkins, after two attempts, finally crossed the goal line with a four-yard run.

Strasburg extended their lead. A 49-yard punt return by Caylin Valentine positioned the Rams favorably at East Hardy’s 36-yard line. Two plays later, senior Aaron Barnes scored the first of his two second-quarter touchdowns. His scoring runs of 32 and 11 yards propelled Strasburg to a commanding 21-6 halftime advantage.

With renewed energy and purpose, both teams returned to the field for the second half.

The Rams received the ball at their own 10-yard line. From this position, they effectively utilized their large offensive line, along with a rotation of running backs, to move the ball downfield.

Five minutes and twelve rushing plays later, Strasburg further solidified their lead as Wilkins scored his second touchdown of the game. The senior finished with only 10 rushing yards but contributed two crucial touchdowns.

The Cougars managed to score once more in the fourth quarter, narrowing the deficit to 14 points, but it was ultimately too little too late.

Barnes led the Strasburg ground game, accumulating 118 yards on 13 carries for an impressive 9.1 yards per carry average. Junior Brandon Holbert added 88 yards, including a 41-yard burst early in the third quarter.

The Rams’ new quarterback, Parker Neal, rarely needed to air the ball out, attempting only two passes. However, he effectively managed the offense, keeping the running game flowing smoothly while contributing 8 rushing yards. The team amassed 325 total yards, all on the ground.

Proctor Enters 40th Season with New Faces

Coming into this year’s opening game against East Hardy, Strasburg will look like an entirely new team; literally. Only one full-time starter from last year’s 8-3 club returns. With 21 spots up for grabs, Glenn Proctor was pleasantly surprised to see the number of new athletes vying for these positions.

Along the 49-man roster are players from the basketball and baseball squads, and 13 sophomores from the junior varsity team. Inexperienced and young would be an understatement, but one seasoned veteran still remains; Glenn Proctor. Proctor – who begins his 40th year season Friday night – will try to instill the winning tradition in yet another group of young Rams. A tradition that includes a 22-year streak of opening season victories.

For the past six years the Rams and Cougars have battled it out on the gridiron. Strasburg has had the upper hand each time, out scoring their West Virginia rival 219-73. Will this year be any different? East Hardy hopes so. With vital starters returning, Ram fans could be more familiar with their opponent then their own team.

Leading the Cougars for the second straight year will be junior quarterbacks Gabriel Brill and Jacob Hackett. Through Brill and Hackett had only one completion in last year’s outing, they both hope to receive support from their returning cast.

Senior Daniel Sine and sophomore Alex Foltz once again line up in the backfield. Sine and Foltz rushed for a combined 60 yards during the 2002 game, with Foltz having the team’s only score. Senior tight-end Mickey Jenks provides another threat in the offensive personal department.

On Strasburg’s side positions have yet to solidify. One that has though is at quarterback. Sophomore Parker Neal has wrapped up the spot. Neal has never taken a snap at the varsity level, but has experience with big games having pitched as a freshman on the baseball team.

Behind him the team has a plethora of tailbacks with some experience. Though none were full-time starters, last year the grouped rushed for a combined 849 yards and seven touchdowns.

Leading the way will be junior Brandon Holbert, senior Aaron Barnes, and senior Joe Stout. Stout also hopes to produce on the defensive side at an outside linebacker spot. He has bulked up his 5-7 frame with an extra 12 pounds of muscle during the off-season.

Joining him at the inside linebacker spots will be junior Max Gardner and senior Jason Wilkins. Wilkins is the lone returnee for the team. From there things become murky.

Though experienced playing-time from the rest of the starters is lacking, two things that aren’t are weight and height. Strasburg – usually not known for its size – finds itself with 14 players weighing in at 200 pounds, and 19 towering at least six feet tall.

The running game hopes to benefit the most from the increase of girth. Three projected offensive lineman – seniors Mat Cox, Sean Pieffer, and junior Brian Foley – average 223 pounds. Along with new tight-end Bobby Hendricks (6-2, 200) the line hopes to improve on last season’s 175.3 rushing yards per game. Hendricks with any luck will add some dimension to the passing attack as well. Only two returning players had catches last year.

Still far less questions remain unanswered as when pre-season practice opened. The Ram’s now have a quarterback, a stable of running backs, a solid linebacker corps, bulk at lineman, and most importantly a VHSL Hall of Fame coach roaming the sidelines.

With only 22 victories away from the 300 win mark – an achievement held by only three other Virginia coaches – Glenn Proctor keeps rolling on, and along with him Strasburg tradition.

Miller Shines in Debut, Rams Dominate

BAKER, WV – The Strasburg Rams, true to tradition, began their 2002 football season with a resounding victory on opening night. First-year quarterback Cody Miller, making his debut, quickly impressed the traveling Ram faithful. Miller showcased his defensive prowess early on, intercepting East Hardy on their initial drive. This crucial interception set the stage for Strasburg’s first score and hinted at a strong senior season for the young signal-caller. Miller’s offensive contributions were also noteworthy, completing six of eight passes for 111 yards, including a five-yard touchdown pass to tight end Matt Kupeski.

The Rams’ ground game, a hallmark of their offensive strategy, remained a potent force. A talented group of running backs, though relatively inexperienced, effectively carried the load. The team amassed 229 rushing yards on 38 attempts, averaging an impressive 6.02 yards per carry. Three rushing touchdowns contributed significantly to their offensive success. Senior Sam Robinson led the charge with 89 yards on 14 carries, while Selvin Martinez added 34 yards and two touchdowns on six carries. Junior Jason Wilkins also made his presence felt, powering his way to 39 yards and a touchdown on four carries.

The offensive line, widely regarded as a team strength, consistently opened lanes for the running backs and provided excellent pass protection for Miller. While the line surrendered three sacks, they effectively neutralized a larger East Hardy defense, allowing Miller ample time to find his receivers. Senior Jason Gutierrez emerged as a top target, hauling in three receptions for 56 yards.

The Rams’ defense proved equally formidable, limiting East Hardy to just 151 total yards. The Cougars struggled to gain ground on the ground, averaging a meager 3.7 yards per rush. The Strasburg defense, spearheaded by a dominant defensive line and linebacking corps, consistently disrupted East Hardy’s offensive rhythm. The Cougars were held to just seven first downs and were forced to punt six times.

Despite a late touchdown by East Hardy, the Rams secured the victory, upholding their tradition of a winning season opener.

Strasburg Rams Open Season Against Familiar Foe

For the sixth consecutive year, the Strasburg Rams will open their football season against the East Hardy Cougars of West Virginia. The Rams have dominated the series, winning all five previous matchups with a combined score of 188-67.

Strasburg boasts a long streak of successful season openers, having not lost their first game since 1980. However, East Hardy hopes to end this streak with a more experienced team this year. The Cougars graduated only one player, their quarterback. Sophomores Jacob Hackett (5-11, 170) and Gabriel Brill (5-10, 165) are currently competing to fill the vacant position.

The Rams also have a new quarterback. Joe Bauserman, the reigning Bull Run District Player of the Year, transferred to nationally ranked Lincoln High School (Florida) over the summer. Senior Cody Miller, the team’s leading receiver from last season, will take over at quarterback. Although Miller threw only one pass last year, head coach Glenn Proctor expresses confidence in his new leader.

The Rams’ backfield will also feature new faces. Both of last year’s leading rushers graduated, leaving a void to be filled by a group of inexperienced runners. This new wave of running backs will need to step up and uphold Strasburg’s tradition of a strong ground game.
