    Rushing Attack Fuels Strasburg Victory

MADISON, VA – Strasburg (6-2, 1-1 Bull Run) once again relied on its strong rushing attack to defeat Madison County and secure their first district win of the season.

The Rams opened the scoring when senior fullback Brian Blevins powered his way in for a short touchdown. The Mountaineers responded immediately with Trevor Yowell’s impressive catch and run. The extra point attempt was blocked, leaving the score tied at six.

Strasburg then embarked on a scoring spree, tallying 25 unanswered points. The first of these came when quarterback Parker Neal connected with freshman Josh Kibler for Neal’s fifth touchdown pass of the season. Strasburg successfully recovered the ensuing onside kick and extended their lead with a Ryan Swanger field goal.

The Rams added two more touchdowns in the second half, including a short-yardage run by senior Brandon Holbert.

Strasburg now enjoys a bye week to recover and prepare for their final playoff push, beginning with a crucial game at Clarke County on November 5th.

Rams Aim to Extend Dominance Over Madison County

Strasburg (5-2, 0-1 Bull Run) completed its out of district schedule with its 48-0 drubbing of Massanutten Military Academy last week, and now will be thrown into the thick of Bull Run play. With the subtle change in the way playoff teams are seeded this year (district champions are no longer seeded first, instead teams are ordered by VHSL ratings) district titles mean much less, but netherless the Rams remain at the bottom of the standings with an 0-1 record. Strasburg will try to put a notch in the win column when they visit Madison County (2-4, 0-1 Bull Run) Friday evening. The Mountaineers are coming off a much needed bye week, after being beaten 27-6 against George Mason on October 15. To their credit Madison County upset perennial playoff team Bath County 23-8 early this season, and will be looking to do the against the same Rams.

Holbert Leads Rams to Consecutive Shutout Wins

STRASBURG, VA – Defense and rushing are two attributes of championship teams. The young Rams are starting to find their stride by following this principle. For the second consecutive week, strong defense and a potent rushing attack fueled a victory. Though their record stands at 3-5, the Strasburg Rams are learning how to win.

This past week, they rode the wave of junior Brandon Holbert’s career-high rushing performance and a stellar defense to secure their first district win of the season.

The 27-0 triumph over Madison County (1-6, 0-2 Bull Run) marks the first time this year the Strasburg Rams (3-5, 1-1 Bull Run) have enjoyed consecutive victories. More impressively, these were back-to-back shutouts. Against the Mountaineers, the Rams employed the same winning formula that led to their dominant performance against Massanutten Military Academy. At the heart of this success once again was Holbert.

Madison County’s initial possession was quickly halted. Three plays later, the Mountaineers were forced to punt. Strasburg received the ensuing kick and began their drive at their own 16-yard line. A balanced attack of rushing and passing plays moved the team 84 yards downfield in 19 plays, culminating in Jason Wilkins’ one-yard touchdown run. Holbert was involved in 12 of these plays.

Starting for the second consecutive week, Holbert delivered a career-best performance, making the Madison County defense appear porous. Finding gaps created by his formidable offensive line, the junior running back amassed 116 yards in the first half alone. His blend of speed, deception, and agility propelled Strasburg to a 14-0 halftime lead and allowed the Rams to control the time of possession.

Strasburg’s second touchdown came through the air. Another forced punt gave the Rams possession at their 36-yard line. Three plays later, the team moved into scoring position, aided by Holbert’s effective running.

On the next play, sophomore Parker Neal connected with his wide receiver, Alan Daly, for a 29-yard touchdown pass, extending the team’s lead to two touchdowns at halftime. Neal completed four of eight passes for 46 yards, demonstrating a relatively error-free performance.

In the third quarter, both teams struggled to gain momentum in the muddy conditions. A battle for field position ensued, with neither team posing a significant threat. However, this changed early in the fourth quarter.

After another forced punt, Strasburg gained excellent field position at the 47-yard line. The Rams orchestrated another lengthy drive, reaching the six-yard line. On the next play, fullback Wilkins fumbled at the two-yard line. Fortunately, the ball rolled into the end zone, where it was recovered by Neil Coverstone for Strasburg, increasing their lead to 21-0.

The Rams added their final points with just 1:55 remaining in the game. Jonah Rodriques recovered a Mountaineer fumble at the 30-yard line. Seven plays later, Wilkins redeemed himself with a four-yard touchdown run, his fifth of the season. The extra point attempt was unsuccessful.

Madison County finally reached the red zone on their next possession. Facing the Rams’ reserve defense, the Mountaineers advanced to the four-yard line before being stopped on fourth down.

Overall, Madison County managed only 140 total yards compared to Strasburg’s 347. Holbert led the Rams with 220 rushing yards on 35 carries, both career highs. Wilkins finished with 15 attempts for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Alan Daly caught two passes for 39 yards. Bobby Hendricks and Caylin Valentine each contributed a reception.

    Six Interceptions Highlight Strasburg’s Performance

MADISON, VA – The game of football has multiply ways of scoring; Friday night’s 23-14 victory over Madison County (2-4, 1-1 Bull Run) displayed seven of those choices. A touchdown run, a punt return, a field goal, and a two-point pass are just an ordinary selection of how both teams put points on the board. But the real highlights are from how the others were scored.

The game began with a routine touchback for Strasburg. However, excitement quickly ensued when the Mountaineers punted, and seniors Jason Gutierrez and Cody Miller executed a brilliant 48-yard punt return. Miller’s speed and agility, combined with effective blocking, led to the touchdown. The extra point by Paul Ziacoma gave the Rams an early 7-0 lead.

A Madison County fumble deep in their own territory allowed Strasburg to capitalize with a 26-yard field goal, extending their lead to 10-0.

The Mountaineers attempted to mount a comeback, but their drive stalled. Madison County quarterback Josh Morris (5-10, 150) was intercepted by Cody Miller.

Strasburg then capitalized on a 64-yard run, leading to a three-yard touchdown by senior halfback Terry Pearce, marking his first career touchdown and start. Pearce effectively filled in for the injured Sam Robinson, rushing for 112 yards on 14 carries (8.0 yards per carry). Fellow running back Brandon Holbert also made his first career start, gaining 107 yards on 17 carries (6.29 yards per carry).

Madison County finally scored on a 46-yard run by senior fullback Matt White, making the score 16-8.

This score remained unchanged until late in the first half. With less than a minute remaining, another Morris interception, this time by defensive tackle Tyler Anderson, resulted in a touchdown for Strasburg, giving them a 23-8 halftime lead.

The second half was a more defensive struggle. The only score came on a 74-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Madison County.

Strasburg’s defense held Madison County to 156 rushing yards (4.72 yards per carry) and intercepted Morris six times. Morris completed only 5 of 33 passes for 73 yards. The Rams amassed 222 rushing yards on 40 carries (5.55 yards per carry), led by Pearce and Holbert.
