BERRYVILLE – One can just about always expect Brent Emmart’s Clarke County High School boys’ basketball team to play with emotion.

Wednesday night was a little different, though. Not only were the Eagles trying to advance to the Bull Run District Tournament championship game for a fourth straight season, but the death of Emmart’s father, John, on Tuesday left Clarke even more determined to win.

STRASBURG – Two forfeits got things started and Strasburg took eight of 12 matches wrestled to soundly defeat Clarke County 50-18 in Bull Run District action Thursday night.

The host Rams racked up four pins and a technical fall en route to the convincing victory.

Strasburg’s dominance left Clarke County coach Jon VanSice lauding the Rams’ performance.

“That was bad,” sighed VanSice. “They were too tough in the middle and lightweights. We lost a match (152 pounds) 6-5 and that hurt. That hurt real bad.”

The Rams basketball season so far can only be described as a rollercoaster. After a four game winning streak Strasburg boy’s basketball team is in the mist of a three game slide, including two blow-out losses to district rival Clarke County. All of this after starting the season with two defeats. With their record now standing at 4-5, and more importantly 1-2 in the Bull Run district, the Rams’ young team will need to regroup with the bulk of their district games still left to be played.

Rams Spooked by Turnovers in Halloween Loss

STRASBURG, VA – Friday’s Halloween matchup between Strasburg (3-6, 1-2 Bull Run) and Clarke County (5-4, 1-2 Bull Run) was more frightening for the Rams than any spooky costume. Strasburg committed an alarming number of turnovers, five in the first half alone. These included three fumbles and two interceptions, allowing the Eagles to capitalize early and secure a decisive 28-7 district victory.

The Rams’ opening possession ended disastrously with a fumbled exchange between the center and quarterback. Clarke County recovered at Strasburg’s 14-yard line, and on the very next play, running back Lee Liggins scored the first touchdown of the game.

Clarke County’s next two scores also resulted from Strasburg turnovers. After intercepting Matt Neal, the Eagles extended their lead to 14-0 with Stacey Poston’s 4-yard quarterback sneak. Neal was injured during the play and left the game in the second quarter.

His backup, junior Jeff Musterman, also struggled. A fumbled handoff gave Clarke County another opportunity, and they capitalized with Liggins scoring his second touchdown of the night. The sophomore added a third touchdown late in the game against Strasburg’s backup defense.

Strasburg managed to score once late in the second quarter. A 10-play, 65-yard drive culminated with Musterman finding a wide-open Bobby Hendricks for a touchdown pass. Musterman completed 2 of 2 passes for 5 yards and the touchdown.

Brandon Holbert continued his impressive run, rushing for at least 100 yards for the third consecutive game. He gained 101 yards on 20 carries, solidifying his position as the team’s leading rusher. Holbert has amassed an impressive 623 rushing yards this season, with 446 of those yards coming in the past three games alone.

Eagles Hold on Late For Win over Rams
A six-point lead with 16 seconds left is usually a pretty safe bet, but Clarke County managed to make it interesting in Friday night’s Bull Run District showdown with Strasburg. The closing seconds weren’t the way Clarke County coach Brent Emmart would have drawn them up, but his Eagles made it work by holding on for a 57-55 overtime victory over rival Strasburg.

Gutierrez Shines on Offense and Defense

BERRYVILLE, VA – Strasburg (7-2, 3-1 Bull Run) cruised to a 29-0 district victory over Clarke County (4-4, 1-2 Bull Run), fueled by a stifling defense that limited the Eagles to just 129 total yards, including only 45 in the second half. The Rams capitalized on multiple Clarke County mistakes, including four turnovers.

Leading by a slim 3-0 margin at halftime, thanks to a career-long 37-yard field goal from Paul Ziacoma, the Rams struggled offensively. The second half began similarly, with Strasburg forced to punt after a three-and-out. However, the game quickly shifted.

Clarke County freshman Lee Liggins muffed the punt return, allowing Jason Gutierrez to recover the ball at the 25-yard line. The Rams subsequently drove 11 plays, culminating in a 5-yard touchdown pass to Gutierrez for his first score of the season.

Three minutes later, the Rams extended their lead to 10-0. After forcing a Clarke County punt, Strasburg capitalized again. On first down, quarterback Cody Miller’s pass was deflected, but he miraculously recovered the ball and threw a pass to a wide-open Matt Kupeski. The tight end made a leaping catch and sprinted 57 yards for a touchdown, evading one defender along the way.

The game remained relatively quiet for the next four minutes. Gutierrez continued to make his mark, returning a 26-yard punt early in the fourth quarter to set up another score. The Rams drove to the Eagles’ 10-yard line and eventually punched in a touchdown with senior running back Selvin Martinez. The extra point attempt was blocked, making the score 23-0 with 10:51 remaining in the game.

Following his offensive and special teams contributions, Gutierrez made a significant defensive play. He intercepted quarterback Stacey Poston, ending Clarke County’s drive. On the ensuing play, Ram running back Aaron Barnes gained 27 yards. He followed that up with a 16-yard touchdown run, securing the final score.

Barnes led the team in rushing with nine carries for 93 yards, a career high. Miller completed 10 of 14 passes (71.4%) for 151 yards and two touchdowns. He also intercepted two passes on defense. Robbie Starkey contributed two receptions for 32 yards, bringing his season total to 20 catches. Kupeski, the team’s leading receiver with 23 catches for 322 yards, recorded two receptions for 77 yards, including his third-quarter touchdown.
