Rams Grounded by Judges’ Aerial Assault

STRASBURG, VA – Strasburg (2-1) sought to contain Handley’s running game, but seemingly neglected to account for their aerial attack. While the Judges’ key runners, Walker Grooms and Michael Lee, were limited to 114 yards on 26 carries (4.38 yards per carry), the Rams’ secondary surrendered 228 passing yards. This vulnerability in the secondary proved to be Strasburg’s downfall as Handley (2-0) exacted revenge for last year’s defeat with a 28-14 victory.

Just four plays into the game, Strasburg found themselves in trouble. A poorly executed snap on a punt attempt resulted in a significant loss of yardage. Handley capitalized on the advantageous field position but fumbled the ball away, their first of four turnovers on the night. However, Strasburg struggled to capitalize on these turnovers.

Strasburg quarterback Cody Miller faced constant pressure throughout the first three quarters, completing only eight of 24 passes with one interception. His receivers also struggled, dropping several catchable balls. Tight end Matt Kupeski was a bright spot, recording five receptions for 76 yards, a season high.

While Handley’s defense effectively limited Strasburg to 46 first-half yards, their offense thrived. Utilizing a combination of quick passes and their speed advantage, Handley receivers Richard Myers and Patrick Wingfield combined for eight catches and 203 yards, propelling the Judges to a commanding 21-0 halftime lead.

Strasburg finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter as the larger Handley linemen began to tire. Running back Sam Robinson scored from seven yards out, briefly igniting a spark of hope. However, this momentum was quickly extinguished by a 55-yard touchdown pass from Handley quarterback Josh Verts to Wingfield.

Robinson added another rushing touchdown late in the game, but it was too little, too late. Robinson finished the game with 103 yards on 18 carries.
