Underwood Leads Eagles into Crucial Clash with Rams

After suffering their first district loss in 21 games, the Strasburg Rams (6-2, 2-1 Bull Run) must now regroup and prepare for a crucial game against the Clarke County Eagles (4-3, 1-1 Bull Run). The Eagles, who have played competitively against top teams like Bath County and Stonewall Jackson, aim to derail the Rams’ playoff aspirations.

Clarke County, a blend of experience and youth with 17 seniors and 14 sophomores, presents a formidable challenge. Led by senior quarterback Derek Underwood (6-1, 170), the Eagles’ offense averages 17.1 points per game.

In their most recent outing, they displayed their offensive prowess with 33 points against another opponent. Underwood, an all-district selection last year, is a versatile athlete who also excels as a wide receiver, defensive back, punter, and kick-returner. He is joined in the backfield by running back Matt Parr (5-8, 160), a key player in the team’s Wing-T offense.

Freshman Lee Liggins (5-6, 150), boasting a team-best 4.6-second 40-yard dash, adds another dimension to the running game. The receiving corps features a mix of seniors (Cody Harris, Franz Szymanski), junior Brian Merke, and sophomore Mike Hill.

Against their previous opponent, the Eagles established early dominance with a strong defensive performance. They effectively moved the line of scrimmage, limiting the opposition to a single first down and 23 total yards in the second half. The Eagles also forced four turnovers, three of which resulted in points. They hope to replicate this defensive success against a Rams offense that has recently struggled.

Historically, the Eagles have faced an uphill battle against Strasburg, having not secured a victory since 1991. The Rams have dominated the series, averaging a 29.4-point margin of victory over that span.
